How to get from Lisbon to Nazare

If you’re looking for an affordable way to get from Lisbon to Nazaré, taking the bus is your best bet. It’s the cheapest option available, and there are regular buses running throughout the day.
The buses are operated by Rede Expressos / Renex and depart from Sete Rios bus terminal, which is easy to reach using the Blue metro line in Lisbon and getting off at the Jardim Zoológico station.
The bus journey from Lisbon to Nazaré takes around 1 hour and 50 minutes and they leave roughly every hour, so you have some flexibility in planning your trip.
The ticket prices for the Lisbon to Nazare bus start at €11 for a one-way trip, which is pretty reasonable and makes it a budget-friendly option for travelling between the two cities.

Train from Lisbon to Nazaré
- Average price: €11 for the train, and a few extra for the bus
- Length of tour: 3+ hours
While there is no direct Lisbon to Nazaré train, you can travel most of the way by train and then change to a bus or taxi.
There is a train that goes from Lisbon’s Santa Apolonia train station to Caldas da Rainha and you can get the bus into Nazare from there.
Trains depart regularly from Lisbon, so you won’t have to wait around for too long for your departure but it’s not the quickest way to get from Lisbon to Nazare due to then having to wait for a bus.
Personally, I’d recommend choosing one of the other options when it comes to going between Nazare and Lisbon.
Driving to Nazare from Lisbon
- Average price: Anywhere from €10-50 a day + petrol + toll fees on the highway (can be avoided but makes the journey longer)
- Average time: 1.5 hours
- Where to book: Discover Cars or RentalCars. I usually use both to check prices and deals and find the best one
Doing the Lisbon to Nazare drive is a great option if you want flexibility and the freedom to make stops along the way.
The journey from Lisbon to Nazaré takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes on the A8 highway, but please note that it is a toll road.
You can expect to pay around €7 in toll fees and if you’re renting a car your car hire company will either charge you per use or will offer you a flat fee for the duration of your rental.
You can avoid these fees by avoiding tolls but this will add about 45 minutes to 1 hour to your journey.
Renting a car can be more expensive than the other modes of transport on this list but it does offer the most flexibility and allows you to stop off at numerous places along the way as you so wish.
It’s important to note that most rental cars in Portugal have a manual transmission, so be prepared if you’re not used to it. If you have a non-EU or British driving license, you might need to obtain an International Driver’s Permit to rent a car.
