Ultimate guide: What to wear on hiking dates

My husband and I have always been adventure enthusiasts who love hiking dates and exploring the outdoors together so I’ve plenty of experience when it comes to what to wear on hiking dates.

When it came to planning our wedding, we knew exactly what we wanted – a hiking date! Yes, you read that right.

We hiked up to the top of a mountain on our wedding day in Tromso, Northern Norway, then met our closest friends and family members down on the beach below the mountain we’d just climbed. It was the ultimate adventure, and we wouldn’t have wanted it any other way.

Hiking dates seem to be getting more popular and honestly, I’m here for it.

However, picking and deciding what to wear for hiking dates and be difficult. But trust me when I say that it’s easier than you think!

The key to picking the perfect outfit for your hiking date is to strike the right balance between comfort, safety and style. You want to be comfortable enough to move freely, but I’m sure you also want to look good and you’ll need certain things to make sure you’re safe while out on your hiking date.

With my tips and recommendations on what you should wear hiking, I’ll help you find the perfect hiking date outfit that’s both functional and fashionable.

Whether you’re going on your first hiking date or your hundredth, you’ll feel confident and comfortable on the trail with your date!

What to wear on hiking dates guide

Choosing the right outfit for a hiking date can be challenging, but with the right tips and recommendations, you can find the perfect balance between comfort, safety, and style.

Below I’ve listed all the clothing items you’ll need to think about for your hiking date, along with my favourites from each category. I’ll recommend some of my top hiking date attire for a hiking date as well as some additional hiking gear you should bring along.

Afterwards, I’ve got some top tips for a hiking date too, to make sure you make a great first impression on your hiking date!

Let’s get started with what to wear on an outdoor date!

Best tops for a hiking date

You should also make sure you have a few layers to your hiking outfits, both for your own safety and comfort. With layers, you can remove things as you need and vice-versa.

It’s typical for temperatures to vary with elevation, which means you may need to adjust your clothing as you hike higher. This could involve adding an extra layer for warmth or removing a layer if you’re working up a sweat.

When choosing a hiking top for a hiking date, you want to prioritise comfort and functionality but also still look cute.

Hiking tops and shirts should be made from lightweight and breathable fabrics that wick moisture away from your skin. You don’t want it to become dripping wet with your sweat while you’re on your date!

You also want a top that allows for freedom of movement and doesn’t restrict your range of motion while hiking.

If the top you choose has UPF sun protection and mesh panels for added breathability that’s an added bonus!

Below, I’ve included the various layers you may want to mix and match from depending on where and when you’re going on your hiking date.

Top tip: It’s important to stay true to your personal style and wear clothes that make you feel comfortable and confident on a hiking date. Avoid buying new clothing that you’re not used to wearing as it’ll only make you feel odd. Remember, the focus should be on enjoying your date and the beautiful scenery, not on constantly adjusting uncomfortable clothes!

Sports bras

When it comes to hiking, it’s important to wear comfortable and functional undergarments. For me, that means opting for a sports bra or lightweight bralette.

While sports bras are ideal for hot weather due to their sweat-wicking properties, I find the Organic Basics bralette to be incredibly comfortable and barely noticeable.

The Lululemon Energy Sports Bra is another excellent choice for hiking in hot weather. Its four-way stretch and Lycra® fibre offer stretch and shape retention while keeping you cool and dry.

The Lululemon Wunder train longline sports bra is perhaps even better. It has all the same features but it’s a longer length so can actually be your hiking top too if you’re feeling confident.

Thin flannel shirts

Fannel shirts not only look pretty cool and ‘outdoorsy’ and they can make a great stylish accessory to wear on your hiking date.

You can wear a flannel shirt as a layering piece or as a cover-up for taking pictures at the summit or viewpoint during your hike. Plus, if you get too hot you can take them off and wrap them around your waist. It makes for endless outfit ideas for hiking dates!

Flannel shirts are a great addition to hiking date outfits for fall hikes too.

Raincoat and rain jacket

Pack a raincoat when going on a hiking date to ensure that you and your date can continue hiking regardless of the weather conditions. Without a raincoat, your hiking date may end early due to being too cold and wet and well, frankly, miserable.

While important whatever the season, rainjackets become even more of a necessity for autumn and winter hikes. Raincoats help keep you dry and warm, making your date outfit comfortable and practical – pretty much what we’re aiming for here!

Waterproof jackets come in many styles, so you can adjust them to your personal taste and the type of hikes you usually go on.

Yellow rainjackets always look super cute in the outdoors, whereas black ones will go with anything.

Breathable short sleeve t-shirt

A good hiking shirt is an essential item for any hiking date.

Look for a shirt made from lightweight, breathable fabrics that wick moisture away from your skin. Features like UPF sun protection and mesh panels for added breathability are also good things to look out for.

Ultimately, you want a t-shirt that isn’t just going to get wet and heavy. Thees options below are good places to start.

Long-sleeve t-shirts

A long sleeve t-shirt is a great option for a hiking date.

Look for a shirt made from lightweight, breathable fabrics that wick moisture away from your skin. Synthetic materials like polyester and nylon dry quickly and don’t retain moisture, while natural materials like merino wool offer good breathability and moisture-wicking properties.

I personally like a merino wool layer if the hike is earlier in the morning, or at sunset. They’re lightweight and easy to throw on but offer a surprising amount of warmth.

Tank tops

Another option for hiking clothes for summer hiking dates are tank tops.

Tank tops are a great option for hiking in hot weather, as they provide maximum breathability and keep your arms free for better mobility.

When it comes to buying a tank top for hiking, you again want something that’s lightweight and moisture-wicking.

You can find hiking tanks in a variety of styles, from fitted to loose and flowy, so choose one that fits your personal style and provides the right amount of coverage and support for your needs.

I would recommend packing a flannel shirt or a long-sleeve top in addition to a tank top if this is what your preferred clothing choice is.

Mid-layer: Fleece sweater

A good hiking sweater should be lightweight and made from breathable, moisture-wicking materials. They provide some additional warmth and go under your waterproof layer (or an additional layer if you’re doing a winter hike!). It’s an important addition to what to wear on a walking date.

Fleece is a popular option for hiking because it provides warmth without adding bulk or too much weight.

You can get sweaters with a full or half-zip which provides additional ventilation, or a fleece layer that does all the way up.

Make sure to choose a sweater that fits well and allows for easy movement, so you can enjoy your hiking date to the fullest.

The best thing about fleece layers is that they come in so many different colour combinations and styles! My favourites are the Patagonia Synchilla sweater and the Patagonia Better Sweater.

Base layers

Base layers are essential for winter hiking dates, as they provide insulation and moisture-wicking properties.

Look for synthetic or wool materials that can regulate body temperature, and avoid cotton as it retains moisture. Merino wool is a great choice for base layers as it is soft, warm, and breathable.

A good base layer will keep you warm and dry, allowing you to enjoy your winter hike comfortably.

Lightweight packable down jacket

When going on a hiking date, it’s important to pack a lightweight, packable down jacket to stay warm and comfortable during your hike.

These jackets are easy to pack and take up minimal space in your daypack, making them perfect for layering in colder temperatures.

To maximise the value you get from your jacket, choose one that is versatile and can be worn both on and off the trail.

And, if you opt for neutral colours it makes it easier to match your other hiking clothes.

Hiking leggings

When it comes to hiking leggings, it’s important to choose a pair that is made from moisture-wicking material and has a good amount of stretch for maximum mobility.

Ideally, the best hiking leggings are a bit thicker than normal leggings for daily use ad they may have a high waistband to provide support and prevent them from sliding down during your hike or some reinforcement in the knees.

These days, many leggings have built-in pockets for phones or snacks in the thigh which I always look for when buying new leggings.

Hiking leggings need to be more durable and resistant to wear and tear than your yoga leggings, so invest in a high-quality pair that can stay looking great hike after hike.

Bike shorts & hiking shorts

It can be hard to think of fashionable hiking clothes but sometimes fashion and hiking gear collide and that’s the case with bike shorts.

For those who prefer shorts over leggings or are going hiking in hot weather, bike shorts are a great option for hiking.

Like hiking leggings, bike shorts should be made from moisture-wicking material and have a good amount of stretch for maximum mobility. You can also get them with pockets on the side, in tonnes of different colours and even different lengths.

I prefer 8″ or 10″ length shorts, but it’s a personal choice.

Insulated / snow pants

insulated snow pants

For winter hiking dates in the snow, snow pants can be a great idea to protect you from the cold.

Look for snow pants that are waterproof and insulated to keep you warm and dry.

Properly fitting snow pants will not only provide comfort and warmth but also allow for ease of movement during your winter hike.

Adjustable cuffs and waistbands can help ensure a snug fit, while reinforced knees and seat areas provide extra durability.

Hiking Pants

Hiking pants can be a great option for a hiking date, especially for longer hikes through forests or trails with rough terrain where you’re worried about getting a scratched leg or having to deal with insect bites — it’s much harder for them to bite through these than leggings!

They are sturdier than leggings and can withstand the wear and tear of hiking without getting caught on branches or ripping.

Hiking pants are also designed to be breathable and quick-drying, which is essential for staying comfortable during a long hike. They often come with zip-off legs, allowing you to easily convert them into shorts when the weather gets warmer.

Additionally, hiking pants often have pockets for storing essentials like your phone, keys, or snacks.

What shoes to wear on a hiking date

Hiking boots

Depending on where your hiking date is taking place, you may need to wear hiking boots. This could also be the case if you’re going on a longer day hike with a heavy pack, or somewhere muddy or wet where hiking boots are much better than boots.

Boots offer good traction, and ankle support just make sure you don’t wear a new pair for the first time on your date otherwise you may be complaining of blisters!

Hiking Shoes

When it comes to footwear for a hiking date, trail running shoes can be a great option, especially in the spring, summer, or fall.

They are lightweight, comfortable, and come in a variety of cute colours to match your outfit.

Trail running shoes also typically have good traction, which is essential for hiking over non-paved surfaces like rocks and gravel.

They are also a good option if you don’t already own a pair of hiking boots and don’t want to invest in a new pair just for a date when you’re not sure how it’s going to go.

Just make sure the running shoes you get are designed for trails and have good traction to prevent any slips or falls on your date.

Blundstone boots can be great for hiking dates on easier trails where you know the path is gravel or paved. They’re cute, easy to pair with many different outfits, waterproof and have pretty good traction for these types of trails.

Hiking sandals

Hiking sandals are a great option for those who don’t want to wear hiking boots or running shoes on their hiking date.

They are perfect for shorter hikes or those where you know you’re going to have to cross over a river or are heading towards a lake on a casual date hike.

They’re also a good idea if you live somewhere with sandy terrain but don’t choose them if you’re going somewhere rocky and mountainous.

Hiking socks

Hiking socks can truly make or break your hiking experience. They’re also a fun way to add a colourful touch to your hiking date outfit.

Hiking socks typically provide extra cushioning vs normal socks and they’re better at wicking away moisture.

Cheap socks can lead to blisters and discomfort, so investing in a nice, durable and comfortable pair is worth the money.

Hiking skirt

If you’re looking for something unique and feminine to wear on your hiking date, consider trying out a hiking skirt or dress.

While not as common as traditional hiking pants or shorts, they can be just as comfortable and practical while still adding a touch of style to your outfit.

Hiking skirts and dresses can help keep you cool while looking cute in warm weather.

Don’t forget these hiking accessories

Yes, your hiking date outfit is important, but so are the additional accessories that’ll keep you comfortable and safe on your date.

black diamond headlamp spot 400

If your hiking date is taking you on a walk at sunrise or sunset, you’ll need a headlamp. It’s also one of the 10 essentials for hiking as you never know when you’re going to take longer than you planned and end up hiking in the dark.

When you’re out in nature, it’s important to protect yourself from bugs and the sun.

Sunscreen and bug spray are essential items to bring on your hiking date. Lakes, rivers and mountain peaks where the snow has just melted can be magnets for mosquitos and no one wants to constantly be swatting them away or dealing with bites afterwards.

Wearing sunscreen is just sensible and better for your health! You’ll also want some sunglasses so you’re not blinded by the sun.

Snacks and water are also essential for your hiking date, but the amount you’ll need will vary based on the length of your hike.

For longer hikes, consider investing in a hiking pack with a compartment for a hydration bladder. This will allow you to stay hydrated without having to constantly stop and take out your water bottle. For shorter hikes, a reusable water bottle is a great choice.

While not the most glamorous item to bring, a compact first aid kit is also essential for any hiking date. Even if the trail you’re hiking isn’t that hard, cuts and scrapes can still happen, and having a band-aid or some afterbite or other such items can make you much more comfortable.

Whatever the length of the hike you’re planning, it’s worth investing in a day pack. Hiking backpacks are designed to take the weight off your shoulders and place it on your waist so they’re more comfortable than other bags.

They also provide you with the space for your layers, safety gear and food and drink.

If you’re planning on hiking in a more remote area, consider bringing some sort of satellite communication device, such as the Garmin inReach. This can be especially useful if there’s no cell service in the area you’re hiking in.

Finally, before you head out on your hiking date, make sure to download offline maps, through a hiking app like AllTrails. This will ensure that you can navigate to the trailhead without needing data, and that you can see your progress on the trail without needing to rely on a signal.

AllTrails is my go-to hiking app for finding, planning, and navigating while I’m out on the trails. With offline maps on AllTrails+ you can be confident you’re still on the right track, even without mobile signal.

Hiking date ideas for summer outfits

that adventurer mountain elopement wedding

When going on a hiking date during the summer, it’s important to dress in lightweight clothing that will wick sweat easily. This will keep you cool and comfortable during your hike.

It’s also important to keep in mind that darker colours absorb more heat, so opt for lighter colours to reflect some of that heat and keep you cooler.

Since many mountainous regions are sunnier during the warmer months, it’s important to bring a baseball cap to shield your face from excessive sun exposure.

Not only will it protect you from harmful UV rays, but it can also add a sporty touch to your hiking date outfit.

If you’re looking for a cute accessory to protect your neck from getting burned, bandanas or buffs are a great option.

They come in various colours and patterns and can add a little extra personality to your look.

And, if your hiking date is on an overcast day, you can use a bandana to tie back your hair, braid it into your hair, or roll it up into a thin strip to use as a headband to pull your hair back and out of your face. So many different uses!

What to wear on a hike date in winter

mt seymour camping (2 of 2)

When it comes to winter hiking dates, layering is key. You’ll want to choose a base layer that will keep you warm and dry, and sweat/water-wicking pants to keep your pants from getting soaked when trekking through melting snow.

It’s also important to have various layers that allow you to adjust your outfit without overheating during your hike.

Don’t forget about gloves! They’re often overlooked, but they’re a crucial part of your winter hiking outfit, especially if you’re hiking in the snow.

A warm beanie is another must have to stay warm in the cold weather when hiking in winter.

What not to wear on a hiking date

hannah that adventurer

When it comes to planning what to wear on a hiking date, it’s important to consider what not to wear too.

While it might be obvious that high heels and a dress are not suitable for a hike, there are other clothing items that you should also avoid.

Unless you’re doing more of a walk, avoid wearing jeans or denim shorts. They may look cute, but they aren’t very comfortable, don’t wick away sweat, and can be difficult to dry if you accidentally get wet.

Trainers (sneakers), slip-on sandals, and flip-flops are another no when it comes to what to wear on hiking dates too. They provide no support, and have limited traction on rougher terrain and can lead to injury which isn’t a good look on your date.

It’s also important to avoid wearing new shoes or clothes you haven’t broken in yet. Choose clothing and shoes that you know are comfortable and won’t cause blisters or discomfort during your hike.

Top hiking date tips

I personally think the answer to ‘is hiking a good date’ is hell, yes! but not everyone might be as enthusiastic.

Hopefully, you have a fairly good idea about what this person might like, but if not, here are some things to consider.

Choose the trail for a hiking date carefully

It’s essential to choose the right trail for your hiking date, as not all hiking trails are created equal.

Your hiking outfit will largely depend on the trail’s difficulty, length, and weather conditions on the day of your hike. The harder and longer the hike, the more you’ll need to think about what to wear on your hiking date, but the information provided above will help.

Remember, it’s always better to be over-prepared than under-prepared for your date!

When choosing a trail, it’s crucial to consider both your and your date’s hiking abilities. A trail that is too difficult for either of you can lead to one or both of you getting tired and miserable or even injured.

Take the time to ask your date about their hiking experience and choose a relatively simple trail for the two of you that allows you to focus primarily on the date, all while enjoying the beautiful scenery.

Remember that this is a date, and you should still be able to enjoy each other’s company and talk throughout the hike; especially if you’re going hiking as a first date.

Make sure they’re up for it

Hiking is undoubtedly a fantastic activity for a date, but it’s crucial to check if your date is equally as enthusiastic about it. Not everyone enjoys hiking especially if you’re thinking of going hiking on a first date with someone new.

If your date isn’t an experienced hiker but is keen to try, start with an easy trail to get them comfortable with the activity.

Take it easy

As tempting as it may be to show off your hiking skills, remember that you’re there to enjoy the company of your date while doing something you both love.

More challenging or longer hikes are better suited for the future when you are both more familiar with each other.

Think carefully about what you wear on a hiking date

While it’s natural to want to look your best on a date, it’s important to prioritise practicality, comfort, and safety when it comes to what to wear on a nature walk date.

Don’t forget that you’ll be out in nature and will need to dress appropriately for the weather conditions and terrain.

Make sure to share your hiking clothing knowledge with your date to ensure that they, too, are well-prepared for the experience. Opt for functional and comfortable clothing over super fashionable outfits that might not be practical or safe for the trail.

Though I think you can still look cute on a hiking date, that’s not the main objective here!

Pack snacks!

When it comes to what to bring on a hike date, bringing snacks is something not to forget!

Hiking can be a physically demanding activity that requires a lot of energy, and having snacks on a hiking date can help sustain you and your date throughout the hike.

Additionally, sharing snacks can be a fun bonding experience and a way to show your thoughtfulness and consideration towards your date’s needs.

Final thoughts on what to wear for a hike date

If you’re planning a hiking date or wondering what to wear to a hiking date, it’s important to consider what you’re going to wear.

Hiking dates can be a fantastic way to connect with each other but if you’re not dressed correctly, it can end in disaster and probably not a second or future date.

To ensure you’re well dressed and fully prepared for a hiking date, make sure you’re comfortable and wearing practical clothing as well as something that looks good.

Hiking dates can be a great way to bond with your partner and enjoy the great outdoors, so be sure to take time to appreciate the scenery and each other’s company.

And, of course, make sure to pack snacks, water, and any other essentials you might need for a successful hiking date. With the right hike date outfit and a positive attitude, you’re sure to have an unforgettable adventure.
