My Travel Medical Insurance Pick: SafetyWing Nomad 2.0
Flights? Check! Bags packed? Check! Travel medical insurance? Check! This wasn’t always the case for me. When I first started backpacking over 10 years ago, travel insurance wasn’t top of the priority list as I looked to keep costs as low as possible. But you know what, not having travel medical insurance is actually more expensive than getting it when you get sick, or your things get damaged or lost.
Over the years I’ve lost countless phones to rivers while enjoying whitewater rafting trips, have had to get medical attention for my now husband, and had the thought cross my mind about what I’d do if I were to fall while bombing it down a ski slope. In recent years, however, I’ve been using SafetyWing as my travel medical insurance including for our recent trip to Georgia where we went skiing in Guadauri.
Our travel plans were complicated. We were Canadian residents, travelling to Georgia, but are originally from the UK and were then moving to Sweden after being in Georgia. In these types of situations, picking a travel medical insurance company can get super complicated. If we’d wanted to be sent to the UK should we need to be then we couldn’t be insured by some companies since we’d already left the UK by the intended travel starting date.
With SafetyWing none of this was a problem thanks to their Nomad 2.0 travel medical insurance.
Plus, we weren’t sure how much travelling we’d be doing in Sweden and whether we’d even end up staying, so having the 4-week, cancel-any-time, subscription was ideal for us. We didn’t have to worry about our plan running out just when we needed it.

SafetyWing Nomad 2.0
Nomad 2.0 is a new and improved travel medical insurance from SafetyWing. They’ve simplified the claims experience so you can spend more time adventuring and less time dealing with paperwork and waiting on hold.
While I haven’t needed to make a claim yet, SafetyWing’s new claims process is super easy. You can do it all online by filling in a quick form that takes as little as 5 minutes and you can get reimbursed in under 3 days. You can also keep track of your claims process in your online account, so no having to wait on hold to see if your claim has been received. Cause let’s face it, you still want to be out there having fun!
One thing I love about Nomad 2.0 is that it suits my needs perfectly thanks to its adventure sports add-on which includes coverage for sports such as skiing and snowboarding, skydiving, tobogganing, whitewater rafting, ski and snowboarding acrobatics and mountaineering under 6 000 m. It’s ideal for adventurous travellers like you and me. You can also add on electronics theft and get covered for up to $1,000 per item should they be stolen. And all this starts from just a few dollars a day.
And the best part is that SafetyWing’s Nomad 2.0 with this easy claims experience is now available worldwide.
My favourite things about SafetyWing Nomad Insurance
Here are some of the reasons why I’ve chosen SafetyWing as my travel medical insurance provider and why I’m happy to recommend it to you.
- Subscription model: Nomad 2.0 is available on a subscription basis which renews every 4 weeks. This means if you’re doing some long-term travelling, or living Nomadically as we did for 18 months, you don’t have to worry about selecting an end date for your policy or needing coverage only to find it ran out the day before.
- Cancel any time: Along with the subscription model is the fact that you can cancel at any time. You’re not locked in for a defined period so if you don’t need it, you can cancel the policy and your coverage will stop before your next billing date.
- Get coverage even when your trip has started: What with all the planning that comes with travelling it can be easy to forget things. And while I hope you don’t forget your travel medical insurance, if you do you can still get coverage even when your trip has started. Coverage begins as soon as you buy your insurance.
- Be covered in your home country: If you’re planning to take trips back to your home country you can still be covered for visits home (as long as they’re not to get treatment). This covers you for 30 days out of every 90 days (or 15/90 days if you’re a US resident).
- Easy claims procedure: And, of course, the easy claims procedure through Nomad 2.0 where you simply file your claim online.
How to get covered with SafetyWing Nomad 2.0
It’s super simple to get SafetyWing travel medical insurance. Through this link, you can create an account and then log in to find the insurance options that are right for you.
You can also add extras such as the adventure sports add-on, or the electronics theft coverage.
Though available in over 180 countries around the world, there are a few restrictions for a couple of countries (like Cuba and Iran). SafetyWing makes it super easy to see what these restrictions are though, I’ve not needed to delve into the fine print with a comb to double-check what I’m covered for.
