Scottish weather is very temperamental and you should always be prepared for wind and rain. That said, crowds and temperatures do change throughout the year so there are some seasons that are better for visiting Loch Ness than others.

• Spring (March to May): Spring is a nice time to visit Loch Ness. The average temperature ranges from 7°C to 13°C, gradually warming as the months progress. Since it’s before the peak tourist season, crowds are thinner and accommodation is more readily available. However, remember to pack a mix of layers, as the weather can be particularly unpredictable during this period.

If you’re visiting this part of Scotland, I highly recommend renting a car as public transport options can be few and are between. If you’re driving below is some basic information.

• From Inverness: The drive from Inverness to Loch Ness is straightforward, taking around 30 minutes via the A82.
• From Edinburgh: It’s roughly a 3.5-hour drive, predominantly using the A9 and A82.
• From Glasgow: The drive is also about 3.5 hours, via the A82 which takes you through the beautiful Scottish Highlands.

Train to Loch Ness

While there’s no direct train station at Loch Ness, the nearest station is in Inverness. From here, you can take a bus or taxi to Loch Ness. Trains from Edinburgh to Inverness and from other major cities Glasgow, and Aberdeen run regularly.

Buses to Loch Ness

Citylink and Stagecoach are the primary bus operators in Scotland. They offer services from Inverness, Edinburgh, and Glasgow to locations around Loch Ness, especially Drumnadrochit, which is a popular base for Loch Ness explorations.
