When we decided to head down California’s Highway 1 towards Big Sur we didn’t get as far as we hoped.
Last winter there was a huge storm that flooded most of the points travelers usually stop off at and resulted in a bridge having to be torn down and rebuilt.
It was still in the rebuilding phase when we were there in May (the water had only just receded) and this meant the road was closed just before you got to Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park. We couldn’t go down to Pfeiffer Beach nor could we see McWay Falls where the waterfall tumbles onto the beach.
You’ll see from the video (above) of our drive that I wasn’t best pleased about this. Especially as we’d have to take a six-hour detour a few days before because of too much snow (although that one ended up in us doing this), and most of Yosemite had been closed too because of snow. A third detour was more than annoying.
However, we still saw plenty of beautiful sights along the part of Hwy 1 we could drive down. Here are a few of my favorites.
