Best things to do in Sun Peaks in Summer

Best things to do in Sun Peaks in Summer

Sharing is caring!

Sun Peaks Resort near Kamloops in BC is a bit of a hidden gem when it comes to summer trips in BC. It’s pretty well known for its skiing and there are plenty of things to do in Summer in winter besides skiing too. But when it comes to summer it’s a bit overlooked!

We spent a winter season at Sun Peaks ski resort and, since we have a place there, visit pretty regularly during summer too. If you’re looking to visit or wondering about the best things to do on a Sun Peaks summer trip, here are my top picks!

12 Best Sun Peaks activities in the summer

There’s so much to do in Sun Peaks in summer! Most of it is outdoors and pretty fast-paced but there is also plenty for those who like things at a slower pace.

Sun Peaks Bike Park

The big reason people visit Sun Peaks, BC in Summer is to go mountain biking! Sun Peaks mountain biking offers 2 mountains of lift-accessed downhill biking, Sun Peaks is the place to be for tech trails, flow trails, jump trails and advanced AND beginner-friendly routes. Plus, you’ll get views for days!

Sun Peaks tickets cost $72 for a full day and there’s the option of just getting 1 ride up if you’re not sure you want to take on a full day!

If you need Sun Peaks bike rentals there are lots of places in the village to rent from. We usually opt for renting from Elevation when we need to.

See a Sun Peaks map here.

Sun Peaks hiking

Mountain biking not your thing? Check out the hiking trails at Sun Peaks mountain resort! You can ridge the lift to get you up into the alpine and then enjoy the trails and the views. Or, you can hike up from Sun Peaks village too.

My favourite hike is to go via Tod Lake to the top of Mount Tod and then take West Bowl down. You get incredible views down into the valley as well as onto the village of Sun Peaks.

Sun Peaks has plenty of black bears around so you must carry bear spray. You’ll also likely see some cows who have roaming rights. Read my Bear Safety post for advice on hiking in bear country.

X-country mountain biking

If you want to earn your downhill mountain biking then check out Mt Morrissey where you can pedal up and ride the x-country trails. There are new trails being built pretty much every year and they’re super fun!

Trail running at Sun Peaks

Love trail running? Enjoy the x-country routes out towards McGillivray Lake. There are some steep sections but not many and it’s pretty much completely runnable. The trails are mostly double track and shared with bikers but it’s typically pretty quiet so you can soak in the sounds of nature as you run in the woods.

If you like races, Dirty Feet hold a trail running race in Sun Peaks every year with multiple distances available.

Axe throwing at Sun Peaks

New to Sun Peaks this year is Cleavage Axe Throwing! Based in Peaks West, this new company has axe throwing open to visitors and even a league!

If you’ve never been axe-throwing before you’ve got to try it. It’s seriously fun!

Sun Peaks wildflowers & sightseeing

Sun Peaks is renowned for its fantastic wildflowers which are usually in full bloom around late July to early August.

There are so many colours of flowers and plants covering the mountainside and you don’t even have to hike far to see them! You can ride the gondola up and down the mountain and just take a stroll on the vista trail to enjoy them in full bloom.

Sun Peaks spa

Need to relax from a busy work-life or after adventuring on the mountain? Sun Peaks has several options when it comes to spas! You can get a mobile massage from Hands on the Move, or head to Kookaburra Lodge to get the full spa experience at Sun Peaks Spa.

Sun Peaks Yoga

The Sun Peaks yoga studio is one of my favourite places in Sun Peaks. It’s beautiful inside and all the teachers are super welcoming and friendly.

After a day on the mountain, a good stretch will help make sure you’re raring to go the next day!

Sun Peaks golf

The golf course at Sun Peaks is BC’s highest elevation course at 1,200 metres above sea level. You’re surrounded by mountains on this 18-hole, par 72 course. There are separate ladies’ and men’s nights golf carts to get you around, of course, and fun times to be had on this 6,400-yard course.

Sun Peaks market

Sunday is market day at Sun Peaks and it’s such a great Sun Peaks event!

Every week there is a mix of stalls throughout the village selling everything from fruit and vegetables to fish, gifts and more all made by local producers.

Paddleboarding at Sun Peaks

Head down the hill slightly to Heffley Lake and go paddleboarding! Paddlesurfit in Heffley Lake provide everything you need for a fun few hours out on the lake which is one of the best ways to stay cool!

Horseback trail riding

Experience Horseback Trail Riding in beautiful Sun Peaks Resort! Tours take place in small groups and all start with meeting your horse and helping to groom and saddle them. At the end of your ride, you’ll assist with feeding and watering the horse or just spending more time getting to know them.
