15+ Best things to do in Sun Peaks in Summer

If you’re looking for things to do in Sun Peaks summer season, I’ve got you covered.

When it comes to summer in British Columbia, there’s nothing I love more than visiting a mountain town to get in some hiking in BC or mountain biking. And Sun Peaks is one of my favorite places to do just that.

We bought a place in Sun Peaks and spent a year living there so we’ve seen it through the seasons. We’re also fortunate enough to go back regularly and by now we know Sun Peaks pretty much inside out.

Sun Peaks Resort near Kamloops in BC is a bit of a hidden gem when it comes to summer trips in BC.

It’s pretty well known for its skiing and there are plenty of things to do in Summer in winter besides skiing too. But when it comes to summer it’s a bit overlooked!

If you’re looking to visit or wondering about the best things to do on a Sun Peaks summer trip, here are my top picks!

The big reason people visit Sun Peaks, BC in Summer is to go mountain biking! Sun Peaks mountain biking offers 2 mountains of lift-accessed downhill biking,

Sun Peaks is the place to be for tech trails, flow trails, jump trails, advanced AND beginner-friendly, and family routes. Plus, you’ll get views for days!

If you need Sun Peaks bike rentals there are lots of places in the village to rent from. We usually opt for renting from Elevation when we need to.

Is mountain biking not your thing? Check out the hiking trails at Sun Peaks mountain resort!

You can ride the lift to get you up into the alpine and then enjoy the trails and the views. Or, you can hike up from Sun Peaks village too.

My favorite hike is to go via Tod Lake to the top of Mount Tod and then take West Bowl down. You get incredible views down into the valley as well as onto the village of Sun Peaks.

Sun Peaks has plenty of black bears around so you must carry bear spray. You’ll also likely see some cows who have roaming rights.

sun peaks summer x country biking

X-country mountain biking

If you want to earn your downhill mountain biking then check out Mt Morrissey where you can pedal up and ride the cross country trails.

There are new trails being built pretty much every year and they’re super fun! Just watch out for bears!

This is one of the best things to do in Sun Peaks fall since the main hills are closed for the season but these remain open. Just don’t ride if there’s snow on the trails as this can ruin them for the following year.

sun peaks summer trail running

Trail running at Sun Peaks

Love trail running? Enjoy the x-country routes out towards McGillivray Lake. There are some steep sections but not many and it’s pretty much completely runnable.

The trails are mostly double track and shared with bikers but it’s typically pretty quiet so you can soak in the sounds of nature as you run in the woods.

If you like races, Dirty Feet hold a trail running race in Sun Peaks every year with multiple distances available. If you enjoy running and like a little competition it’s a fun idea for things to do during a Sun Peaks summer.

On the way to Tod Mountain

Hike to Tod Mountain and Tod Lake

One of the best hikes in Sun Peaks is definitely the hike to Tod Mountain via Tod Lake. You can take the chair lift up the mountain (there’s no Sun Peaks gondola) to skip most of the elevation and then you have a couple of routes you can take to make your way to the lake and then the mountain.

From the top of Tod Mountain, you’ll get panoramic mountain views and you can also see Harper Mountain to the south!

Play golf at the Sun Peaks golf course

The golf course at Sun Peaks is BC’s highest elevation course at 1,200 meters above sea level!

You’re surrounded by mountains on this 18-hole, par 72 course and it’s truly beautiful. If you’re keen to play, you can book a 9 or 18-hole golf session and it’s recommended you do so in advance as the tee times can book up.

There are also separate ladies’ and men’s night socials, golf carts to get you around, of course, and fun times to be had on this 6,400-yard course.

Sun Peaks Market Days

Sunday is market day at Sun Peaks and it’s such a great Sun Peaks event!

Every week there is a mix of stalls throughout the village selling everything from fruit and vegetables to fish, gifts, and more all made by local producers.

At the end of your ride, you’ll assist with feeding and watering the horse or just spending more time getting to know them.

johnson lake bc

Take a day trip to Johnson Lake BC

Johnson Lake near Sun Peaks British Columbia is sometimes said to be the clearest lake in Canada! Whether that’s true or not, I’m not sure, but it’s definitely super clear!

In fact, if there’s no wind and you go when the sun is shining you can get super cool photos of people kayaking and paddleboarding near Sun Peaks where it looks like they’re floating in mid-air.

Getting to Johnson Lake from Sun Peaks is pretty easy and you can take a shortcut compared to if you’re going to Johnson Lake from Kamloops. It’s one of my favorite things to do at Sun Peaks in the summer.

Sun Peaks restaurants: where to eat in Sun Peaks

For a small village, there are still some great Sun Peaks restaurants to keep you fuelled during your visit to Sun Peaks. Here are some of our favorites:

  • Powderhounds: Famous for their schnitzel and potatoes, you won’t leave hungry!
  • Voyageur: The fanciest place in the village which serves up great French-Canadian dishes and does a delicious Christmas lunch
  • Vertical Cafe: If you need a quick lunch or breakfast head to Vertical for local, homemade food with loads of vegetarian and vegan options
  • Bolacco: Great service and delicious pastries!
  • Mountain High Pizza: Tasty slices and whole pizzas. The best Sun Peaks pizza!
  • Bottoms Sun Peaks: Bottoms is a must while you’re in Sun Peaks! Tasty burgers and nachos, great drinks and it’s a whole lotta fun!
  • Ohana Deli: Not a restaurant, but does have lots of frozen pies and meals that are easy to heat up and eat in your Sun Peaks accommodation.

Best places to stay in Sun Peaks BC

Sun Peaks is a pretty small village but also relatively spread out. The Valley Trail that runs from the south near Peaks West and the Burfield Chair up to just past the village is a pedestrian and bike friendly route that you can use all year round instead of a car.

However, when it comes to where to stay in Sun Peaks, I personally think locating yourself near the village, or in Peaks West where you’ve still got shops and restaurants is better than on the far eastern end of the village. There’s a lot of housing in the east, but it’s mostly second homes and so it’s a bit ghostly at night sometimes. Plus, it’s a further walk from the facilities in Sun Peaks.

With that said, here are my top picks on Sun Peaks accommodations.

  • Alpine Rooms: Biased? Sure, but I do think our Airbnb is one of the best places to stay in Sun Peaks. You’re in Peaks West, get free parking and a hot tub with beautiful mountain views. It’s a 2-bed, 2-bath and has a sofa bed too. There’s secure private storage for 4 bikes as well.
  • Sun Peaks Grand: Right in the middle of the village, this hotel has a beautiful heated outdoor pool, fitness center and offers pet friendly accommodations in Sun Peaks.
  • Sun Peaks Lodge: Another great option for accommodation in Sun Peaks Village, this is another of the hotels that is pet friendly and has a hot tub sauna and steam room for guests.
