The Coogee to Bondi Beach Coastal Walk
If there’s one thing you have to do when visiting Sydney, it’s the Coogee to Bondi Beach walk.
The walk is more commonly known as the Bondi Beach to Coogee Beach walk, but personally, I think doing it the other way if you’re new to the city is better as you get the big reveal of the famous Bondi Beach and Bondi Icebergs pool when you round the last corner at the end.
I’ve been fortunate enough to do this walk several times and it’s always been a highlight of my Australia East Coast trips!

About the Coogee to Bondi walk
The Bondi to Coogee beach walk is arguably the best of the Sydney coastal walks. It typically starts at the ultra-famous Bondi Beach, Sydney, and finishes at Coogee Beach but you can also do it the other way around.
This coastal walk is absolutely stunning from start to finish. You go from up high on the cliffside to right down at sea level. Grab some brunch, a flat white or take a dip in the sea before carrying on your walk.
You may seem some places call this a Bondi Beach hike, but you’ll be pleased to know most of the walk is flat, so it’s definitely more of a stroll than a hike!

The Bondi to Coogee walk distance is just under 7 km long. You can make it longer by walking the extra 2.9 km from Coogee Beach, Sydney to Maroubra, or shorter by just doing the Bondi to Bronte walk.

Bronte Beach is great for swimming and surfing so you may want to stop for a spot of that! Or do the Bronte to Bondi walk after surfing.

My experience walking from Coogee to Bondi, Sydney

I love the Coogee to Bondi coastal walk and have done it twice now. Whichever direction you complete the Coogee – Bondi walk, you’re in for a treat! Personally, I prefer ending this coastal walk at Bondi since that feels like a better grand reveal!
There are plenty of cafes, restaurants and beaches to stop off at and swimmers and surfers to watch.
Oh, and if you keep your eyes open you might even spot a few whales off out in the distance.
I’m pretty sure we did, there was a massive splash far out to the horizon every few minutes and I’m pretty sure I saw a fin but I can’t be 100% sure…
There’s one spot just as you leave Coogee Beach where you can deviate from the main path and take a more rocky route.
I highly recommend you do, you get even better views here and we even got to listen to a man playing on some strange sort of flute-violin-type instrument which sounded amazing!
Gordon’s Bay
There’s a small boardwalk that takes you through some native plants (it’s almost forest-y!) and as you round the corner you’ll see Gordon’s Bay.
If it’s a nice day and you’ve packed your snorkeling gear then make sure you give the Gordon’s Bay underwater nature trail a try.
The idea behind it is to be like a water hiking trail. Instead of signs to mark out the trail, there are underwater drums which are linked by a chain. You follow these to complete the underwater trail.
There are even plaques underneath which explain what the wildlife you’re seeing is. The whole thing takes about an hour to do.
Clovelly Bay
At Clovelly Bay, you may want to stop for a coffee as we did. In which case stop off at Seasalt cafe and kiosk which has a lovely terrace with sea views does a fab coffee and breakfast.
Bondi Beach

The last part of the walk from Tamarama to Bondi is nice and easy and is used in Sydney’s annual Sculpture by the Sea event where 100 sculptures are featured.
If you keep your eyes open you might spot some aboriginal artwork of a whale or shark!
If you’re walking from Coogee you’ll spot Bondi Icebergs, the infamous outdoor swimming pool that you’d have seen in a tonne of Instagrams and then Bondi Beach behind it.
Go for a swim in either the sea or the pool and relax after your walk from Coogee Beach to Bondi Beach.
If you still have energy after this and are wondering what to do in Bondi Beach here are a few ideas. You could go for a swim at the Bondi Icebergs pool, take a beach walk along Bondi Beach or grab a flat white in a nearby cafe.
In case you’re wondering, the Bondi Beach length is 1km. (Check out the Bondi beach map above)
